Our Chapter
YBG in New Haven benefits from and hopes to contribute to the work of Urban Resources Initiative, Inc: the 30-year old partnership between the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Science (now YSE) and the greater New Haven community. URI, as both a Yale program and a nonprofit with a local board of directors, is a conspicuous success in urban community forestry and environmental education. They touch every corner of our city: 41 all-volunteer neighborhood stewardship and park friends groups have access to new trees, on the ground training, and ongoing expertise through their Greenspace program. Yale alumni events center on Day of Service projects with URI and Park groups, but also include workdays throughout the year with the park and neighborhood groups. Recently, an article in the Yale Alumni Magazine, “Reforesting the Elm City,” highlighted the partnership between Yale and URI, and last year the New York Times published an article about the effort to restore the urban canopy in New Haven.
